António Olaio

Antonio Olaio (Lubango, Angola, 1963) graduated in Fine Arts/Painting from the Porto School of Fine Arts (FBAUP) in 1987. 

His performances in the early 1980s led him to music. He was one of the founders of the “Reporter Estrábico”group in 1986 and, since 1995, his songs with João Taborda and many other musicians often feature in his videos and exhibitions. His last album “Anywhere Else” featured collaborations with Richard Strange, Victor Torpedo, Vitor Rua, Frederico Nunes, Anselmo Canha, Paulo Furtado, José Valente, Érika Machado, Silvestre Correia, Susana Chiocca, Luís Figueiredo, Ana Deus, Haarvöl, PedroTudela and Miguel Carvalhais.

He has exhibited regularly since 1986, highlights including solo shows at Culturgest (Lisbon, PT), Museu do Chiado (Lisbon, PT), Museu do Neo-Realismo (Vila Franca de Xira, PT), Museu Grão Vasco (Viseu, PT),  Kenny Schachter conTEMPorary (New York, USA), Galerie Schuster (Berlin, DE), Galeria Mario Mauroner (Vienna, AU), CCA Andratx Art Contemporani (Mallorca, ES), Appleton Square (Lisbon, PT) or CAPC Circulo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra, as well as the participation in group shows at venues such as Palais de Tokyo (Paris, PT), Foundation Marcelino Botín (Santander, ES), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, FR), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, FR), MAAT (Lisbon, PT), CAM – Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, Portugal) or Serralves Foundation (Porto, PT).

His work is represented in numerous national and international collections such as CACE Contemporary Art Collection of the Portuguese State (PT), Museu Extremeño Ibero-Americano de Arte Contemporânea (Badajoz, ES), Serralves Museum (Porto, PT), EDP Foundation (Lisbon, PT), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (PT) or the Contemporary Art Museum / Museu do Chiado (Lisbon, PT)      

Olaio is a PhD from the University of Coimbra (2000), having directed the Colégio das Artes from 2013 to 2023. He is a researcher at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies CEIS20.
